statement

My oil paintings are an exploration of composition and color.  They occupy the intersection of contemporary and traditional realism.  Working in oils is a reminder of my passion for painting and I am constantly searching for new “excuses” to paint.  Through my process, the subject becomes secondary to the paint application.  I choose ordinary objects that absorb and reflect light and that cast interesting shadow patterns.  I enjoy revealing the striking features in common everyday objects by painting them loosely and expressively.

In my style of painting I use unique compositions, irregular formats, harmonious color combinations, repetitive shapes, and extreme cropping to create dynamic and expressive paintings that are visually interesting.  My style is unified through the use of thick paint and playful brush strokes.  I begin each piece by loosely drawing in the shape of the object and its cast shadow then, generally blocking in the light and shadow sides so that a rhythmic pattern of light and dark is created.  I continue layering and stacking my brushstrokes, in a variety of sizes and directions, until I have shaped the chosen commodity into three dimensionality.

My paintings offer an interpretation of how I view my subject matter in relationship to its environment.  When people see my work, I'd like them to enjoy each piece for its rich color harmony and pleasing visual appeal.
